All
undergraduate majors in the Department of African Studies are
required to complete a total of 36 credit hours of course work
in the Department, including the core program.
The

701 Introduction to Contemporary Africa is a writing course
equivalent of AFST
101.
Students
can select any of the following courses within the Department
to satisfy the remaining 12 credits required courses:

AFST 131 African Cultural Formations and
Identities
AFST 137 Southern Africa
AFST
157 Literature, Film and
Society in Africa
AFST 191 Senior Colloquium
Additional
Requirements include a language requirement with a minimum of
12 credit hours
in one of the languages offered
by the Department of Modern Languages
and
Literature.
Students
are strongly encouraged to take an African language.
A
senior comprehensive examination is required in the Senior
year in addition
to the internship
experience (AFST 183).
For

Students
are also advised to work in close consultation with their academic

The
College of Arts and Sciences Minor Course Requirement |
The
Department of African Studies offers a minor in African Studies
which requires a total of 15 credit hours, including AFST 101
Introduction to Contemporary Africa and AFST 106 Foundation
to African Studies.
The remaining credit hours are available through additional courses
in the Department that students should select in consultation
with an academic advisor.

Model
Four-Year Course Scheme for African Studies Majors |
This scheme is only a general guide. Once students declare African Studies
as a major, they should consult with the Educational Advisory Center (EAC)
of the College of Arts and Sciences (Locke Hall, Room 110) in order to
work out a Scheme of Graduation. Credits earned in the Center for Academic
Reinforcement (CAR) courses do not count toward graduation.
