Directions to Howard University

If your point of origin is not at one of the universities, we recommend using any online mapping source to get specific directions. The following is travel directions to Howard from all the universities. All of the following directions are using public transportation.

Select your starting point:

From American University

  • Starting at the Tenley Town/AU Metro stop, board the Red Line train heading to Glenmont
  • Transfer trains at Gallery Place/China Town and board the Green Line heading to Greenbelt
  • Get off at the Shaw-Howard University stop
  • Exit the station going north, which is the direction the Greenbelt train travels
  • After ascending to the top of the escalator, turn right and head north on Georgia Ave
  • Another option is to take the Howard University Shuttle Bus or Silver Spring Metro Bus (70 or 71 Lines) that stops right at the top of the escalators, to the campus
  • Walk to or exit at the front gates of Howard University
  • Turn right (heading east) on Howard Pl. and turn left (heading north) on 6th St
  • Douglass Hall is the building right across from the stop sign and crosswalk

From Catholic University

  • Starting at the Catholic University Metro stop, board the Red Line train heading to Shady Grove
  • Transfer trains at Gallery Place/China Town and board the Green Line heading to Greenbelt
  • Get off at the Shaw-Howard University stop
  • Exit the station going north, which is the direction the Greenbelt train travels
  • After ascending to the top of the escalator, turn right and head north on Georgia Ave
  • Another option is to take the Howard University Shuttle Bus or Silver Spring Metro Bus (70 or 71 Lines) that stops right at the top of the escalators, to the campus
  • Walk to or exit at the front gates of Howard University

From Georgetown University

  • Catch the G2 bus from the front gates of Georgetown at the corner of 37th St. and O St.
  • Exit the bus when it reaches the corner of Bryant St. and 4th St., NW
  • Walk north (the opposite direction the bus is traveling) along 4th St
  • Turn left on Howard Pl. (heading west) and this will take you to the University Quad
  • Douglass Hall is located on the west end of the quad

From George Washington University

  • Board the Blue Line or Orange Line Metro train at Foggy Bottom/ GWU heading towards Addison Road or New Carrolton
  • Transfer to the Red Line train to Glenmont at Metro Center
  • Transfer trains at Gallery Place/China Town and board the Green Line heading to Greenbelt
  • Get off at the Shaw-Howard University stop
  • Exit the station going north, which is the direction the Greenbelt train travels
  • After ascending to the top of the escalator, turn right and head north on Georgia Ave

  • Board the Orange Line Metro train at the Ballston/MU Metro stop heading towards New Carrolton
  • Transfer to the Red Line train to Glenmont at Metro Center
  • Transfer trains at Gallery Place/China Town and board the Green Line heading to Greenbelt
  • Get off at the Shaw-Howard University stop
  • Exit the station going north, which is the direction the Greenbelt train travels
  • After ascending to the top of the escalator, turn right and head north on Georgia Ave

  • Exit the station going north, which is the direction the Greenbelt train travels
  • After ascending to the top of the escalator, turn right and head north on Georgia Ave

Directions to Andrews Air Force Base

By Driving:

Andrews AFB is located approximately 10 miles southeast of Washington, DC, in Prince George's County, Maryland

  • Head south from 6th St NW
  • Turn right at Bryant Street, NW
  • Turn Left at Georgia Ave, NW
  • Turn Left at New York Ave, NW
  • Turn right at I-395 South and head toward Tunnel
  • Take the I-295 exit to Anacostia
  • Bear left onto the South Capitol Street Ramp
  • Bear right at S Capitol Street, SW
  • Continue on Suitland Parkway, SE
  • Continue on Suitland Parkway
  • Take the Suitland Road ramp to Andrews AFB
  • Turn left at Suitland Road
    • You cannot make a right here. You must make a left and then a u-turn at the first turnaround
  • Make a U-turn on Suitland Road just beyond the underpass of Suitland Parkway
  • Continue on Suitland Road for 1.4 miles
  • Andrews AFB Main Gate is directly ahead at the intersection of Allentown Road and Suitland Road

By Metro Rail:

If you need to take METRO, the trip still involves a last leg of either carpooling or taxi ride.

  • From Howard University’s stop at Shaw-HU METRO Station on the Green Line, take the Green Line in the direction of Branch Ave. to Branch Ave. METRO Station

The trip takes 24 minutes and costs $3.35 (regular fare) or $1.95 (reduced fare).

By Metro Bus:

Take the K12 Bus towards Suitland Station and get off at Allentown Rd and Suitland Rd.
