Interior Design Students Win 2011 Made: In America Design House Competition
Congratulations to Howard University Department of Art Interior Design students -- winners of the 2011 Made in America Design Show House Competition. Under the leadership of Mark Watkins, assistant professor of interior design, the students designed an Old World Library and fabricated everything from custom millwork to wall and window treatments. High end furnishings and fabrics were provided by sponsor showrooms at the Design Center.
The interior design students who participated in the competition are Naada Favitsou-Boulandi, Omar Tulloch, Karen Ennis, Alicia Johnson, Naomi Black and Bretagne Blair. The Jury panel spent nearly 4 hours viewing and evaluating each of the rooms. The panel consisted of 2 interior designers, an architect and two other members of the Congressional Club. They selected the Library room, created by Howard University as the winner. The high caliber of each room made selecting one a very daunting task. The panel members were astounded by the level of design sophistication and execution in each room.
The purpose of the Design House is to challenge young designers to interpret classic American interior design for the 21st Century.
They used American-made products from this year’s MADE: In America award winners: Century Furniture; Keith Fritz; Duralee Fine Furniture; Kindel; MacKenzie Dow; Brighton Pavilion and Mc Neilly.
The participating schools were: Anne Arundel Community College, The George Washington University, Howard University, James Madison University (Harrisonburg, Va) and Montgomery College. Sponsoring Showrooms who represent the award winners are: Michael-Cleary, Duralee, Century Furniture, The Rist Corporation, Charles Ray and AmericanEye.
The Design House is open to the public on Mondays thru Fridays, November 16, 2011 through January 28, 2012 (except holidays) at
Washington Design Center, 300 D St. S.W., Concourse Level. A banner will be placed on the exterior of the Washington Design Center promoting the run of the show.
