Mr. Tyrone Boyd ( BS, 1974 ) of Washington, DC is currently a songwriter. He is showcasing his latest offering, "The Eight Count Woman Blues", at various open-mike nights in the Washington, D.C. area. Amerecord Records of Hollywood, CA will produce this song in 2003. Several of his songs have been entered into an international songwriting competition, the results of which will be made public later this year.

Mrs. Lillian Green Childers (M.S.'59, B.S.'57) of Washington, DC, is currently working as a housewife. She has also sponsored, for many years, the Lillian Green Childers Award given to deserving undergraduate students during our annual Honors and Awards program. Mr. Damian Young (BS, '98) and Shawna Hester (BS, '97) of Durham, NC will be wed November 23, 2001 on Hilton Head Island, SC. Shawna is currently teaching high school chemistry in Durham. Dr. Barry D. Self (PhD, '98) and Rae Self (MS, '98) are currently residing in Baton Rouge, LA. Barry is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Southern University, Baton Rouge. He is also founder and President of Southeastern Dental Research Corporation in Port Allen, LA. His business has become successful, currently with $350,000 per year in contracts; he hopes to grow that to $500,00 in 2002. He and Rae now have three daughters (Brittany, 7; Breanna, 4; and Brielle, 2). Rae is a part-time chemistry instructor at Baton Rouge Community College. Mr. Tyrone Boyd ( BS, '74 ) of Washington, DC is currently a songwriter. HillTop Records of Hollywood, California will release "The Songs of Tyrone Boyd" in the spring of 2002. This special four song compact disc (CD) represents the results of three years of collaborative efforts between Mr. Boyd and HillTop's Executive Producer, Tom Hartman. "The Tour", a rock music anthem and Tyrone's latest work, is the lead selection. "Brooke", a tribute to the legendary actress, is the next offering and is done in a poignant jazz arrangement. A folk music tune entitled "Frankie's True To Malibu" is followed by Tyrone's first recorded song, "Just Call Her Pam", which was previously released on the "Country Magic" cassette. "The Songs of Tyrone Boyd" is the third CD containing songs written by the aspiring lyricist.

Dr. Surendra N. Kumar (MS, '75; PhD, '79) of Wheaton, IL is the president and CEO of HI-Tek Environmental, Inc. d/b/a STAT Analysis Corporation--a minority owned environmental business. His business is very strong in commercial laboratory testing and has some R & D activities. Additionally, he is developes and commercializes environmental remediation technologies. Recently, his business won a technology challenge grant to develop electro-kinetic remediation techniques for metals and PCBs contaminated sites. His research advisors in our department were Prof. Joseph B. Morris (MS) and Prof. Kelso B. Morris (PhD).

Dr. Destardi Moye-Sherman (BS, '90) of Newburgh, NY received her PhD in 1999 from Texas A&M University. She is currently a Scientist in the Process Chemistry group with Emisphere Technologies in Tarrytown, NY. For the past 2.5 years at Emisphere, she has worked in the Medicinal Chemistry and the Process Chemistry Groups. Her research focuses on developing carriers (small molecules) for oral delivery of proteins. Prior to receiving her PhD, she worked for two years as a chemist with Kraft Foods. While pursuing her PhD she was wed to husband Marcell; they have a daughter, Ellyssa, and a 3-legged cat, Sebastian.

Dr. Sushila J. Peterson (BS, '74) of Washington, DC received her DDS degree in 1979 from Howard University, Dental School. She has been in private general dental practice for 22 years. She has served four years active duty and two years reserve in the US Army Dental Corp and has won the US Servicemen's Merit Ribbon. She is active with the Woman's National Democratic Club, American Association of University Women and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She is a member of the National Dental Association, the Howard University Alumni Association and the Robert T. Freemen Dental Society. Additionally, she is listed in "Who's Who in Black America ( 1988)" and "2000 Notable American Women (1992)".

Dr. Donald J. Gordon (BS, '64) of Helotes, TX received his chemistry PhD, in 1971, from Oregon State University and MD degree, in 1977, from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. He did his residency in EM at the Brooke Army Medical Center. He is a retired US Army Lt. Colonel; tenured professor of EM medicine; and Chair of the National Red Cross Advisory Committee on First Aid and Safety. He is on the National Faculty of EM Medicine Cardiovascular Care Committee of the American Heart Association. He has been an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota and at West Point (the US military academy). Currently, he is EMS Medical Director for San Antonio, TX, Professor and Chairman of the Department of EM Medical Technology. UTHSC-SA. Mrs. Rosanne Anderson-Smith (nee Anderson, BS, '78) of Knoxville, TN is a Technology Development Staff Member at BWXT Y-12 Complex in Oak Ridge, TN. In 1981, she received a MS degree in chemistry from the University of California-Irvine and, in 1983, a MS degree in Materials Engineering at George Washington University. She expects to receive her PhD degree (Polymer Engineering: gas transport in polymers) in May, 2001 from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She is married with two sons (ages 11 and 4) and is active in the Oak Ridge Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.

Dr. Chukwuma O. Nwaonicha (PhD, '93) of St. Paul, MN is now a Marketing Administrator at 3M Company. In his current position, he travels frequently abroad: Asia, Europe and Africa. He has won the Technical Circle of Excellence Award and received many recognition awards. He is a consultant in technology development in Africa and is involved in community and volunteer services. Mrs. Ramona C.T. Crosby (nee Thompson, MS, '57) of Hackensack, NJ is currently retired from Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation (now Novartis). Since leaving Howard she as engaged in many activites, including receiving an MS degree in Management (1989) from Polytechnic University. She is now pursuing studies in classical music as a pianist with the intention of becoming a composer. In August 1999, she performed Scarlatti's Sonata No. 7 in D Major at Castello della Romcia in Tolentino, Italy. Her research advisor in our department was Prof. Percival Barnes.

Dr. Dorothy N. Eseonu (nee Ogbonna, MS, '81) of Chester, VA is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Virginia Union University, Richmond, VA. Her current research interests are syntheses and characterization of biologically active compounds. In 1989, she received her Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University. From 1990 to 1993 she was an Assistant Professor at Virginia State University. Her research advisor in our department was Prof. Jesse Nicholson.

Ms. Mary E. Pitman (BS, '71) of Washington, DC is Acting Vice President at the Village Foundation, a community foundation with the mission of repairing the breach between African-American males and US society. She is responsible for corporate image, inclusive of web site and public relations and has been responsible for the implementation of foundation programs, oversight of grantmaking, foundation publications, community relations and special projects. Prior tot his, she served as Executive Assistant to the President of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) wherein she assisted the President in the overall management of the University and made day-to-day operational decisions on issues presented to the President's Office. Additionally, she acted for the President in his absence, as directed, and served as staff liaison and staff director for all matters related to the operation of the Board of Trustees. While at UDC she also served as coordinator for the Financial Services Systems Operations and liaison to university-wide committees where where she represented the Vice-President for Finance. Her management experience also includes having served as assistant area controller for the D.C. government, assistant controller for Accounts Payable for Public Broadcasting Systems in the District of Columbia, controller for the National Institute for Advanced Studies, accountant for the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., and staff accountant for Bert W. Smith, Jr. & Associates. She has also done graduate work at Howard in educational psychology and guidance and counseling. She is a member of the Association of Black Foundation Executives, the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education, Phi Delta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., the Metro Marlins Swim Club Parent Association, the Capital Ballet Guild, the Jones Haywood School of Ballet and Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ. She has one daughter, Lauren, who is a rising senior at Elizabeth Seton Catholic High School and an avid swimmer being Captain of the Seton High School Swim Team and a member of the Metro Marlins Swim Club - the only privately run African-American swim team in the Washington Metropolitan Area.Her undergraduate research advisor in our department was Prof. Moddie Taylor.

Mr. Tyrone Boyd. (B.S., 1974) of Washington, DC is in the music business. "Brooke," a stirring vocal tribute to the great actress, will be released on the Amerecord label CD "Star Route USA" in 2001. "Follow" and "How Can I Not Love You?", were released on the same label in 2000. In 1999, His first composition, "Just Call Her Pam," was released on the HillTop Records cassette "Country Magic". He has several movie treatments being reviewed by agents at this time. He also finds time to write a column for the Railsitters, a thoroughbred racing fan club in the Washington, D.C. area. His column concerns strategies used in betting on thoroughbreds and new handicapping methods that , he says, "...are guaranteed to win money for whoever uses them." Jeffrey T. Smith, Esq. (B.S., 1987) of Bowie MD was appointed (in July 2000) as an Administrative Patent Judge for the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. In 1996, he received a Juris Doctor from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law and is a member of the Maryland State Bar. He entered the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 1988 as an Assistant Examiner and, in 1995, was appointed Primary Examiner. He was appointed Supervisory Patent Examiner in 1998 and served in that capacity until 1999 where upon he was appointed Program and Resource Administrator for the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. Ms. Alicia J. Chambers (B.S. ,'93) has recently relocated back to the DC area to work as an associate in the newly formed Office of Graduate Education at the American Chemical Society (ACS). Prior to her relocation, and immediately after receiving her chemistry degree, she volunteered as a chemistry teacher in the Mississippi Delta for two years. Teaching she says took its toll and she then turned to the nonprofit arena to work as a Program Director for an organization whose mission was to improve education for all children. This then lead her to seek a degree in Higher Education and to pursue her desire to improve the educational standards of children in the US. After receiving her Master of Education degree, in 2000, from the University of St. Louis - Missouri, she accepted a position as Interim Director of Multicultural Affairs at a college in St. Louis, but her love for chemistry and education pursuaded her to accept the newly created position of Staff Associate of Graduate Education at ACS. She looks forward not only to working in DC but to giving back to the community that has helped shape her into who she is today! In addition, she is single!

Rev. Ralph Steven Hodge (B.S.,'92) of Richmond, VA received is Master of Divinity degree in 1995. He currently serves the Saint Paul's Baptist Church of Richmond Virginia as Director of Missions and Ministies. In this position, he directs over 500 volunteers in seventeen different ministry areas that serve a 5000 member congregation. His duties include-- but are not limited to-- supervising international, national, and local mission projects, as well as seventeen other ministries including programs for children, youth, singles, married couples, men, women, seniors, and prisoners. He is married to Kassandra (nee Elder)--a Howard graduate--and they have four sons.
