The Department of Classics at Howard University is one of a very small number of institutions of higher learning that offers undergraduates the opportunity to study both Classics and Egyptology: the languages, literatures, histories, philosophies, art and archaeology of the ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome, and Egypt. The Department offers both majors and minors as well as classes that may be taken either as electives or as divisional requirements. The African-American tradition of classical scholarship in America is at least as old as Phyllis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Dubois, William Sanders Scarborough, and Howard's own Wiley Lane (d.1885; first black professor of Greek at Howard); and more recently, Frank M. Snowden, Jr., long-time chair of the Dept. of Classics and former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Toni Morrison (Nobel laureate in literature in 1993, a Classics minor at Howard).
