REQUEST FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2010 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

  • Graduate of an Economics program at Howard University (any level)
  • Must be nominated by fellow alumni  

Selection Criteria:

  • Outstanding professional contributions
  • Longevity in the profession
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Demonstrated community service
  • Contributions to the Howard University community

2007 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS

LTC Hazel L. Robinson

Hazel Robinson graduated with honors from Howard University, earning a BA in Economics 1979 and an MA in Economics 1986. In 1979, she was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army Reserves, serving for 27 years and recently retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Hazel is the recipient of numerous military awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal )w/Bronze hour glass), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Among Hazel’s numerous contributions to the University, she is a founding member of the Howard University Economic Department Alumni Association (HUEDAA), which, under her leadership established Senior Recognition, Graduate Travel, and Distinguished Alumni Awards. Under her leadership two scholarship funds to assist students studying economics were endowed—the Joseph R. Houchins Scholarship Fund and the Jean Louis DuCarmel Bocage Loan Fund. During Homecoming 2007, Hazel was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the University, as she became one of the first recipients of the HU College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Service Award. Hazel’s commitment to higher education and community service is evident outside the Howard University community as she and her siblings annually fund the Elouise Rice Robinson Scholarship, established in memory of their mother. Hazel is currently a Senior Economist at the Food Safety and Inspection Service Agency at the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC.

2005 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS

Mr. Joseph A. Hawkins

Mr. Hawkins graduated from Howard with a B.A. in Economics in 1972. Subsequently, he earned a Master’s degree in Economics from Georgetown University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from George Washington University. Mr. Hawkins retired from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in 2004, where for over two years he served as Deputy Assistant Administrator for Analysis and Chief Economist. Prior to joining TSA he was the Deputy Assistant Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He also served as the Director of Rulemaking for two years at the FAA. Early in his career, he held economist positions at the Bureau of Labor Statistics and at the U.S. Coast Guard. He and his wife, Patricia, have three children, Joi, J’Vaughn, and Joselynn.

2003 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS

Dr. Debby Lindsey-Taliefero

Dr. Lindsey Taliefero earned a B.A. in 1976, and M.A. in 1978 and a Ph. D. in 1983. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Finance at Howard University’s School of Business, where she has taught Economics for many years. She is dedicated to preparing students for the rigors of the business, finance, and economic world and in 2002 her students demonstrated their appreciation by selecting her as the “Professor of the Year’ in the School of business. Dr. Lindsey’s research efforts have focused on consumer issues, mortgage lending discrimination, and automobile credit discrimination. She has published in numerous economic journals and has provided expert testimony in Federal lawsuits alleging automobile credit discrimination. Prior to joining the HU faculty in 1987, Dr. Lindsey worked as an economist at the National Urban League, the NAACP, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and as a weapon systems research consultant for Analytic Services, Inc. She is married to attorney and businessman, Michael S. Taliefero and they have on son, Van Taliefero.
