The
National Economics Association (NEA) was founded in 1969 as
the Caucus of Black Economists to promote the professional
lives of minorities within the profession, and to produce
and distribute knowledge of economic issues that are of exceptional
interest to native and immigrant African Americans, Latinos,
and other people of Color.
The
NEA holds its annual meeting in conjunction with the annual
meetings of the Allied Social Sciences Association in January
of each year. At the meeting, HUEDAA supports the Howard University
Economics Department when the Department hosts its reception
by sending a delegation to help promote the Department. HUEDAA’s
delegation also attends NEA sponsored panels and the Westerfield
Luncheon, a luncheon where a renowned Black Economist is recognized
for his or her contribution to the field of Economics.
HUEDAA
also provides a travel stipend to a graduate economics student
from Howard University to attend the meeting as a means of
broadening and enhancing their educational experiences.
In
2007, Dr. Gwendolyn Flowers and Dr. Michelle Rucker represented
HUEDAA at the NEA annual meeting in Chicago, IL, and Ms. Hazel
Robinson represented the organization in 2008 in New Orleans,
LA. The 2009 NEA meeting will be in San Francisco, CA. All
HUEDAA members and Friends of HUEDAA are encouraged to attend.
