Howard University will host a symposium to honor the life and contributions of the late Dr. John Hope Franklin to the history of African Americans and the advancement of civil and human rights in the United States.

The panels will highlight the dynamism of the black intelligentsia that surrounded him at Howard, his pioneering research in archives and black historical collections, the centrality of his work for new interpretations of the black experience, and his impact on international interpretations of American history. Franklin’s own reflections on his work and career will be shared through several documentary films and recordings.
