EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY

Exercise Physiology offered by the Department of Health, Human Performance and Leisure Studies is designed to enable the student to develop a working knowledge of the cardiovascular and neuromuscular aspects of exercise physiology. Completion of the Exercise Physiology program will prepare students for entrance into graduate school. The effects of exercise on the structure and function of the cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems are studied in detail in this program. Guidelines for graded exercise testing and exercise prescription are based on those recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine.

Upon completion of this program students will

  1. have a detailed understanding of the cardiovascular and neuromuscular aspects of exercise physiology,
  2. be able to assess both cardiovascular and neuromuscular fitness,
  3. have a working knowledge of current computer generated fitness assessment and exercise prescription programs,
  4. be able to prescribe aerobic and muscular training programs which adhere to "guidelines for graded exercise testing and exercise prescription" established by the American College of Sports Medicine
  5. and understand how to design and conduct research in the areas of cardiovascular and neuromuscular exercise physiology.
