PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The undergraduate teacher preparation
curriculum is a combination of courses in teaching methodology
and the human
performance sciences (i.e. anatomy, kinesiology, exercise physiology, & motor
learning). Professional and technical instruction is given in teaching
and coaching the various sports, and activities, that are commonly
taught in public schools with the addition of appropriate theoretical
academic background. Howard University's physical education program
provides students with the opportunity to study the teaching of
human movement. Students learn how to develop the age-appropriate
educational movement activities in the areas of fitness and skill
development, games, and sport. Students will develop teaching strategies
that will allow them to meet the needs of the whole student from
a psychomotor, cognitive and affective domain perspective. Through
the infusion of University General Education Requirements, the
sciences, and core courses in physical education, students become
competent teachers in physical education for elementary and secondary
schools. The sequence of courses are designed to provide the student
with skills and leadership experience needed to direct a balanced
program of physical education classes, intramural and extramural
activity programs.
