Dr. Johnson joined the faculty at Howard in 2006 after working as a Research Associate in the university&#8217;s College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, to teaching courses on the African Diaspora, Dr. Johnson is also the Assistant Director of the <a href="http://sarap.howard.edu/" target="_blank">South African Research and Archival Project</a> (SARAP), a digital documentation project, located on the campus of Howard University. SARAP is designed to identify, locate, inventory and disseminate information pertaining to the involvement of Americans in the liberation struggle of South Africans, especially during the anti-apartheid movement. Dr. Johnson specializes in the modern African Diaspora with a particular focus on linkages between African Americans and Southern Africans. His research interests include the significance of individual agency in 20th century transnational social movements, how historical memory shapes identity in a diasporic context, and the experiences of women of African descent living outside of Africa. Dr. Johnson has co-authored a digital database with Joseph E. Harris on the South African liberation struggle and is currently editing a monograph on African Americans and the anti-apartheid movement.<br> <br> </p></TD> <TD width="277" valign="top"><table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <!--DWLayoutTable--> <tr> <td width="277" height="408" valign="top"><blockquote> <div align="left"> <p align="left"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><img src="images/Johnson.JPG" width="115" height="159"></font></p> <p><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Charles Johnson<br> Assistant Professor of History<br> Ph.D., Howard University, 2004 <br> Telephone: 202 806-6815/7029<br> Fax: 202 806-4471<br> E-mail: <a href="mailto:cdjohnson05@gmail.com">cdjohnson05@gmail.com</a></font></p> </div> </blockquote></td> </tr> </table></TD> </TR> <TR background="images/bottum_bar.gif"> <TD height="27">&nbsp;</TD> <TD COLSPAN=4 valign="top"><table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <!--DWLayoutTable--> <tr> <td width="799" height="27" valign="middle" background="images/bottum_bar.gif"> <div align="center"><font color="#FFFFFF" size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><strong><a href="chair.html">CHAIR STATEMENT</a> |<a href="faculty.html"> FACULTY</a> | <a href="graduate.html">GRADUATE</a> | <a href="undergraduate.html">UNDERGRADUATE</a> | <a href="courses.htm">COURSES</a> | <a href="events.html">NEWS AND EVENTS</a> | <a href="Links.html">LINKS</a> |<a href="INDEX.HTML"> HOME</a> | <a href="HTTP://WWW.COAS.HOWARD.EDU">COAS</a> </strong></font></div></td> </tr> </table></TD> </TR> </TABLE> </BODY> </HTML>
