In
2003, the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) Board of
Education under its “State” function was awarded
a five-year State Improvement Grant (DC-SIG) by the U. S. Department
of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. The purpose
of the DC-SIG is to create school-wide approaches to support
all learners in DC public schools, resulting in increased student
achievement and decreased need for special education services.
A
major focus of the DC-SIG is to increase capacity of special
and general education staff to support the academic and behavioral
needs of all students. The DC-SIG has four major initiatives:
- Student
Support Teams
- Positive
Behavioral Interventions and Supports
- Dynamic
Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills
- Family
Engagement.
Howard
University in collaboration with St. John’s Community Services
is conducting an evaluation of the DC-SIG Program.
