Spring Conference will honor Professor Blackwell

On April 19-20, 2012, Howard University will be hosting a conference honoring Dr. David Blackwell, noted mathematician and statistician. Dr. Blackwell, a former member of the Mathematics Department faculty, made several fundamental contributions to probability theory, statistics and game theory, and was the first African American to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Proceedings of Water Waves Conference

Proceedings of the NSF/CBMS Conference on 'Water Waves: Theory and Experiment' edited by M.F. Mahmood (HU), Diane Henderson (Penn State U), and Harvey Segur (U Colorado) was recently published (April 2010) by World Scientific Publishers. The five day Regional Conference was held at Howard University from the 13th to 18th of May 2008. Professor Mahmood of the Department of Mathematics was the Principal Investigator and organizer of this conference. The conference was attended by eminent applied mathematicians, engineers, scientists and tsunami experts from various universities and research organizations. There was an overwhelming response of graduate students from various schools all over the country to this conference. Prof. Mahmood and his former Ph.D. student, Dr. Sean Brooks were among those who presented papers at this conference.

Professor Mensah publishes book on LIDAR techniques

Howard University Department of Mathematics is proud to announce the publication, in May 2009, of the book LIDAR TECHNIQUES AND REMOTE SENSING IN THE ATMOSPHERE, by our own Dr. Francis Mensah. Published by AuthorHouse, Bloomington, Indiana, the book is subtitled "Understanding the use of laser light in the atmosphere."

Professor Diagana Receives Mauritania Honors

Professor Toka Diagana , Department of Mathematics Howard University, has recently been awarded the PRIX CHINGUITTY by the Republic of Mauritania for 2006. He has received a sum of 5 million ouguiya (about $15,000) and a diploma from the Ministry of National Education of Mauritania. The "Chinguitty Prize in Sciences" is a national prize awarded yearly to reward the merits of either a citizen of Mauritania or of another country for major research achievements in sciences. The Prize was awarded to Professor Diagana in December 2006 during an official ceremony in Nouakchott before the President of Mauritania and the Diplomatic Corps. It is important to note that since its creation in 1999, Professor Diagana is the first black African to be a Chinguitty Prize laureate.
