Vocal Coordinator: Connaitre Miller 202-806-7097 Instrumental Coordinator: Charlie Young, III 202-806-7872 Technology Emphasis: Chris Royal 202-806-7087 The Jazz Studies program develops skills in jazz performance, composition, arranging, and history; and offers an optional emphasis in Music Technology. The Department of Music at Howard University initiated a comprehensive Jazz Studies Division in 1970, becoming the first historically black institution of higher learning to offer the bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies. In 1983, the National Association of Schools of Music approved the master of music degree in Jazz Studies. The objective of the Jazz Studies program is to preserve and perpetuate jazz through instruction, performance, and research. Included in the curriculum are improvisation, arranging, composing, history, digital music, and studies relating to the music business. Jazz Studies with Music Technology Studies Undergraduate Jazz Studies majors may use one of the following schemes to add a concentration in Music Technology, which includes studies in MIDI sequencing, notation software, audio recording, and live sound reinforcement. Students may be admitted to the technology program only after being accepted into the Jazz Studies Program through audition.
Degree Requirements Candidates for the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies must take a total of 128 credits in the following: Principal Instrument 111, 112, 121, 122,131, 132, 141, and 142; Music MUSB-003, MUSB-004, MUSB-021, MUSB-022, MUSC-001, MUSC-002, MUSC-008, MUSD-051, or MUSD-058, MUSH-011, MUSH-012, MUSH-016, MUSH-021, MUSH-022, MUSH-031, MUSH-032, MUSH-076, MUSH-111, MUSH-112, MUSI-101, MUSI-102, MUSI-071, MUSI-074, MUSI-010, MUSI-170, MUSI-240, (Electives) Student Recital MUTO-011, MUTO-012, MUTO-021, MUTO-022, MUTO-031, MUTO-032, MUTO-041, MUTO-042; 8 credits in Jazz Ensemble or Elective Ensemble, 12 credits of electives, 12 credits of General Studies, 2 credits of Physical Education ENGL 002, ENGL 003, MUSI-032 or 100-305, FAOR-101. |
