HOWARD UNIVERSITY JAZZ VOCAL WORKSHOP is the most recent performing group in the Department of Music, established in 1994. This innovative group, which is offered for academic credit, focuses on jazz and contemporary repertoire utilizing both a cappella and instrumental accompaniment. Students and faculty contribute arrangements and original material for study and performance. The group includes vocal and instrumental students from the music department, theatre arts, and other departments within the University. In addition to public performances, the Jazz Vocal Workshop can be heard on the Howard University Jazz Ensemble CD HUJE ’94.

HOWARD UNIVERITY JAZZTET is an instrumental ensemble that focuses on small group performance.  The group is a direct outgrowth of improvisation classes and membership is by audition.  Jazztet instrumentation ranges from quintet to octet.  Students who elect Jazztet receive academic credit and study the classic small ensemble works of composers such as, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, and Horace Silver.  In addition, students and faculty provide original compositions for study and performance. The Howard University Jazztet performs public concerts and has recorded on several HUJE albums and CDs.

HOWARD UNIVERSITY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

THE HOWARD UNIVERSITY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA presents performances of music from the standard classical orchestral repertoire and in conjunction with the mission of the University, features works by African-American composers such as William Grant Still and Adolphus Hailstork. Strong emphasis is placed on the development of musical expression within the context of advanced ensemble playing.
