CHARLES TIMBRELL, Professor of Music and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies B. Mus., Oberlin Conservatory, M. Mus., University of Michigan; D. M. A., University of Maryland; post-graduate studies at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Rome, and privately in Paris. Teacher of piano, piano pedagogy, piano literature, vocal accompanying, and keyboard harmony Charles Timbrell, a native of New Jersey, studied piano with Emil Danenberg, Benning Dexter, Stewart Gordon, Guido Agosti, Gaby Casadesus, and Monique Haas. He has performed solo recitals at Carnegie Recital Hall, Wigmore Hall (London), National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Festival Estival de Paris, Festival du Touquet, Palazzo della Cancelleria (Rome), Vysocina Festival (Czech Republic), and in Scotland, Wales, and Canada. He has also performed and lectured at leading music schools, including Mannes, San Francisco Conservatory, Royal College of Music (London), Ecole Normale de Musique (Paris), and the Universität für Musik (Vienna). He has recorded for Dante CD (France) and has been heard numerous times on public radio. His playing has been described as “masterly, with real insight” (London Times) and “strong, extroverted and colorful” (New York Times). Dr. Timbrell is the author of French Pianism (Amadeus Press, 1999), Prince of Virtuosos: A Life of Walter Rummel, American Pianist (Scarecrow Press, 2005), a chapter in The Cambridge Companion to Debussy (2003), performing editions of Bizet’s Jeux d’enfants and Chopin’s Barcarolle (Alfred Publications, 2004 and 2007), more than forty articles in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and articles in various musicological journals, including Music and Letters, Cahiers Debussy, and the Journal of the American Liszt Society. Dr. Timbrell has served for five years on the national selection committee for Fulbright awards in piano and has judged numerous competitions. He is listed in The International Who’s Who in Music and Who’s Who in American Education.
