James Weldon Norris, Professor Coordinator of the Music History Program and Studies (202) 806-7088/6222 Room LVC 3016 J. Weldon Norris, a native of South Carolina graduated from South Carolina State College in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology. After a tour of duty as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve, Dr. Norris matriculated at Howard University from which he was awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Music and Master of Music (music theory) in 1959 and 1960, respectively. At Howard, Dr. Norris studied under Professors Vada E. Butcher, Evelyn White, Warner Lawson, and mark Fax. From 1969 until 1973, he served as Director of Choral Activities; Chairman, Department of Humanities; and Acting Academic Dean at Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina. In 1975, Dr. Norris, a Ford Foundation Fellow, was awarded the Doctor of Music degree from the School of Music at Indiana University. At Indiana he studied under the eminent Julius Herford, as well as Dr. Flora Contino and Dr. Hugh Johnson. Dr. Norris was appointed Director of University Choral Activities and Professor of Music at Howard University in 1973. He has pursued post-doctoral studies at the Johann Sebastian Bach Academy in Stuttgart, Germany, as well as the Hayden Congress in Vienna, Austria, and Hungary. He has also studied with choral directors Robert Shaw and Eric Ericson, Director of the Swedish Radio Choir in Stockholm, Sweden. A published arranger and scholar of the Negro spiritual, Dr. Norris was asked to deliver lectures on that genre at the Amerka-Schule and America-Haus in Hamburg at the University of Gottingen, Germany and more recently in Krakow, Poland and Valencia, Spain. Despite a busy schedule of performances with the Howard University Choir throughout the United States and abroad, Dr. Norris is often in demand as a choral adjudicator and guest conductor at county and state festivals. Dr. Norris recently appeared as a commentator in two films for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), namely, "Al Green" and "Jessye Norman". He created and recorded the music score for a film produced by the United States Park Service entitled "To Do Battle in the Land", a documentary on John Brown. Dr. Norris has served on the Educational and Choral Panels for the National Endowment for the Arts and is presently a member of the panel for the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities. In addition to his duties as director of the Office of University Choirs and Bands and conductor of the Howard University Choir, Dr. Norris has recently been appointed to the music panel for the Maryland Arts Council. |
