John Mercer graduated from Howard University School of Law in 1973. In his senior year, he was recognized as the Law School's “Outstanding Student”.  After a clerkship with Judge John D. Fauntleroy of the D.C. Superior Court, he entered the private practice of law in 1974. While in private practice, he also served as supervising attorney for the Howard University Criminal Justice Clinic.

At the outset, Mr. Mercer's practice was predominantly litigation, criminal and civil. In addition,  he practiced in the areas of employment, international business and entertainment. On behalf of his business clients, he traveled extensively in Africa, the Caribbean. In 1980, Mr. Mercer was recognized as “Lawyer of the Year” by the National Conference of Black Lawyers (“NCBL”).

As his legal career has evolved, Mr. Mercer has focused on entertainment, employment, contracts and litigation. During his association with several firms Mr. Mercer has represented artists, film companies, writers and others in business and entertainment. Mr. Mercer is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and the Bars of the U.S. District Court for Maryland, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and the Bar of the United States Court of Claims.  He is a member of the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Associations (“BESLA”) and the Arts and Entertainment Section of the District of Columbia Bar Association.

Mr. Mercer has represented artists with major and independent recording companies including Sony, Warner, Arista, Virgin, Island, Loud. His entertainment experiences have included being the executive producer of a feature film, serving as associate producer of several videos and representing music and film production companies. Mr. Mercer has taught “Introduction to Entertainment Law” in the Music Department of the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard since 1994.
