USE OF FACILTIES

The Department of Music maintains practice rooms, classrooms, labs and halls to be used by music majors, music minors and other students enrolled in Department of Music performance, piano and theory courses. Third floor classrooms are not practice facilities, but may be used for practice/rehearsal only with permission of the Department of Music chair or a designated faculty member. Individual faculty studios may be used for practice/ rehearsal only with permission of the faculty member involved. Participation in ensembles is limited to enrolled students, and current faculty and staff of the University. Other participants are required to have the written permission of the Chair of the Department of Music and the Associate Dean of Fine Arts.

Department of Music Terms of Use

1. Department of Music facilities, including but not limited to practice rooms, computer labs, classrooms, and teaching studios are to be used only by current Department of Music students, faculty and staff with proper Howard University ID, and other persons with written authorization from the Chair of the Department of Music.

2. Persons in any room may be asked to produce valid Howard University identification, or to verify how they entered a secure room. Guests may only use the facilities while accompanying persons with valid access credentials.

3. Eating and/or drinking are not permitted in the practice area, computer labs, classrooms, or Recital Hall. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the facility.

4. Pianos, chairs, benches, stands or other provided equipment shall not be removed from rooms, or relocated from room to room. Chairs, tables, stands and other such articles are not to be left in hallways or stairwells (fire code violation).

5. Sound levels must be kept reasonably low enough so as not to disturb others. Either playing instruments in hallways or singing in hallways is usually disturbing to classes, rehearsals, and other sessions in progress

6. Tops of pianos shall be for holding music or books only. Under no circumstances should any other objects, including instruments or liquids, be placed on top of or inside any keyboard instrument, or on its keys. Persons shall not use keyboards (of any type) as furniture.

7. Windows on doors shall be kept clear of all coverings, except for schedules posted by the Department of Music.

8. Rooms may be inspected at any time. Personal possessions should not be left or stored in practice rooms, classrooms, or any common area without the written permission from the Department of Music. The University does not assume any responsibility for such property. Any such items left unattended may be discarded at the discretion of the Department of Music without notice.

9. Lockers are to be cleared and locks removed at the end of each academic year. Notice will be posted for deadlines. Students may petition in writing to leave items over the summer months. Any items left after the posted deadlines and without any petition from the student may be discarded by the Department of Music without further notice.

10. Persons granted access by key, key card, or code are held responsible not to share or loan their access credentials to others who are not currently authorized or who have lost their access credentials. Under no circumstances should keys, key cards, or codes be copied or distributed without the written permission of the Department of Music.

11. Persons shall make sure doors are fully secured when leaving a secured room or area. Please report any malfunctioning door mechanisms to the Department of Music immediately.

12. The rear exit of the Practice Area is a fire exit for emergency use only. These doors are not for normal access to or from the practice area. Do not block these doors, or any fire exit, open for any reason.

13. Departmental computers are not to be tampered with, disconnected, or otherwise altered. Software applications shall not be copied from the machines. The computers shall not be used to make illegal downloads or uploads of copyrighted material.

14. Vandalism anywhere in the department is to be reported immediately to the Department of Music (202-806-7082) or the Office of the Associate Dean (202-806-7040). If you are witnessing vandalism in progress or any dangerous situations or behavior, please call Campus Police immediately at 202-806-1100.

15. Persons using the music facilities are not to tamper with or attempt to circumvent security measures or cameras, block doors open, or engage in any destructive or inappropriate behavior when using the facilities. Persons found to have participated in any such activities will be barred from using the facilities and may be subject to academic suspension, or in some cases, prosecution.

16. The department reserves the right to deny the use of its facilities to anyone unwilling to obey the above policies. Access must be renewed each semester based on enrollment status or any other permission granted by the Department of Music. and to receive new access codes and/or validation stickers when applicable.
