Contact: Prof. Connaitre Miller **view flyer** HOWARD UNIVERSITY’S AFRO BLUE TO PRESENT CD RELEASE CONCERT Washington, DC – Howard University’s premier vocal jazz ensemble, Afro Blue will be featured in concert to celebrate the release of their new CD It’s a Matter of Pride. The concert will be held on December 6, 2009 at the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel on the Howard University campus at 3:00pm.Howard University’s premier vocal jazz ensemble, Afro Blue, was formed by Connaitre Miller in the spring of 2002. In the span of seven years, Afro Blue has received six Down Beat Magazine Student Music Awards in the categories of Best College Jazz Group, Outstanding College Jazz Choir, Outstanding College Vocal Jazz Soloist, Best College Jazz Arrangement and most recently in 2009 for Best College Vocal Jazz Ensemble. In April 2008, Afro Blue released their first recording, Freedom In Song, a double-CD compilation of songs recorded by the ensemble between the years of 2002-2008. It can be purchased at www.cdbaby.com or at The Howard University Bookstore located at 2225 Georgia Avenue, NW. It’s a Matter of Pride, is Afro Blue’s second CD recording. The title is taken from the first movement of Peaceful Warrior, Billy Taylor's jazz suite written as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Afro Blue dedicates this CD to Dr. Billy Taylor, one of the world’s foremost jazz musicians. Afro Blue will be performing selections from their new CD, which also features some solo performances by members of the ensemble, in addition to new material not yet recorded. The CD It’s a Matter of Pride will be available for purchase at the concert as well as Afro Blue’s first recording Freedom In Song, the Howard University Jazztet’s new release, Reign, and the Howard University Jazz Ensemble HUJE 2008 CD. They will all be offered at a special one-day price of $10 each.Also to be featured at the concert will be Howard University’s other two jazz vocal ensembles, SAASY and A Whole Lotta Jazz Singers. SAASY is a select group of nine female voices who perform accompanied and unaccompanied (a cappella) vocal jazz arrangements. SAASY’s current roster is made up of students who are music majors and minors. This ensemble is directed by Jessica Boykin-Settles. A Whole Lotta Jazz Singers is a jazz choir made up of both male and female members. The choir is open to all students enrolled at Howard University and entrance into the group is by audition. This ensemble is directed by Graduate Teaching Assistant, Terri Davis. This concert will be part of the “Sundays at the Chapel” series and is co-sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the Chapel and the Howard University Jazz Studies program. This event will serve as the year-end concert for the Howard University Jazz Studies/Jazz Voice program and will be free of charge. The concert will be held at the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel which is located on the Howard University campus at 6th Street and Howard Place, NW, Washington, DC. |
