String Program
Howard University offers a comprehensive program of advance instruction
in all stringed instruments. Our faculty is drawn from among the most outstanding teachers
and performers in the Washington, DC area, one of the country's foremost
centers of musical activity. Faculty members, as well as guest artists
and ensembles offer frequent performances.
Howard University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in violin,
viola, cello, bass, and guitar in applied music performance, as well
as music education, music therapy, and music business with emphasis
in all stringed instruments. In addition to their applied instrumental
study, string majors at Howard also perform in chamber music ensembles,
the Howard University Concert Band,
Howard University Jazz Ensemble,
and the Howard Orchestra. All students are also encouraged to perform
in master classes held by visiting artists.
Howard students also have the opportunity to perform in other local
orchestras and ensembles. Few cities in the world can boast the richness
of cultural life found in Washington, DC. Just across town is the
John F. Kennedy Center for
the Performing Arts, home to the internationally renowned National
Symphony Orchestra and The Washington Opera. The Center also offers
regular performances by the finest orchestras, chamber ensembles and
recitalists from across the nation and around the world. In addition,
other national institutions such as the Smithsonian and the Library
of Congress offer their own series of recital, chamber and orchestral
performances, as well as having the finest research and reference
resources in the country.
