WELCOME

For over 100 years, Howard University has displayed superiority in nurturing and developing the best professional men and women around the globe. The Mecca now boasts excellence in the performance of its marching band - The Marching Bison.

Known for its stellar stereophonic sound, kaleidoscopic precision drills, star-quality vocalist and dazzling dynamic dance routines, the Marching Bison is the mainstay of a diverse and ever expanding population at Howard. One hundred and fifty members strong, The Marching Bison is the largest student organization and holds the distinction of being the "spirit of the University." Membership is not limited to music majors; it is open to all disciplines. Scholarships are offered on the basis of departmental need, overall ability of the student and availability of funds. The diverse repertoire in the marching band includes traditional and contemporary literature.

Under the direction of John Newson and Kelvin Washington, The Marching Bison performs at all home football contests. In addition to the local performances, The Marching Bison has a travel schedule that has included performances at numerous NFL games. Some of those performances have been for the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Baltimore Ravens, to name a few. These performances were of such a caliber to receive both national and international attention invitations were extended to participate in the 1990 Shrewsbury Music Festival in London, England, as well as the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in New York.
