Travel Information

Airports

The following airports service the Washington D.C. area: Baltimore/Washington (BWI), Dulles (IAD), and Reagan National (DCA). BWI is the furthest from the D.C. center, but it offers the cheapest airline tickets (i.e. Southwest Airlines is offering a ticket from Los Angeles to D.C. for $331 during the dates of the conference). National is the closest to D.C., yet it is also the smallest airport (it offers the most expensive tickets, but you can catch the Metro from a station directly inside the airport). From BWI and Dulles to D.C., you have to take either a bus, taxi, or the Super Shuttle. Taxis are expensive (up to about $50 each way). Taking the bus to the Metro station or the Super Shuttle (www.supershuttle.com  OR Call 1-800-Blue-Van) to your hotel is the most affordable option. Please see further information here.

The rooms at the Holiday Inn will be reserved at a special rate ($119.99 plus tax per night) until February 5, 2010. You must reserve your room by calling them before that date. After that date, rates will increase depending upon availability. Howard U. has an ongoing agreement with them for an individual rate ($139.00 plus tax per night), but specifically for the conference, we have negotiated a better price. This hotel is located four blocks from Dupont Circle (a number of bars and restaurants) and a few blocks from the restaurants and bars on Connecticut Ave. It is also within walking distance from two Metro stations.

Parking

Parking is difficult around Howard University. There are four-hour parking meters for those who are driving, but classes will be in session and students will be looking for those same spots. We recommend that you take the Metro from your hotel to the Howard-Shaw Metro stop and then take the shuttle to the main campus. If you would rather walk, the walk from the Metro stop to the main campus is about 20 minutes. Buses also run along Georgia Ave. and stop close to the main entrance.
