Tips for Becoming a More Effective and Efficient Student

  • Buy textbooks, notebooks, and other materials before classes begin.
  • Buy a divided notebook or a separate notebook for each subject you are taking.
  • Read your syllabi and know what is expected of you for the semester.
  • Attend all assigned class sections each day.
  • Come to class on time.
  • Accept responsibility for your own learning.
  • Learn your professor's office locations, phone numbers, and office hours immediately.
  • Obtain any missed assignments or handouts from your instructors or fellow students.
  • Get an assignment book and record your deadlines or due dates for papers, exams, projects, etc.
  • Take notes.
    • Date all pages of your notes
    • Number each page of your notes
    • Use underlining, highlighting, and other methods of emphasizing important information
  • Keep a monthly calendar in a highly visible place; write in all assignments and exams that are coming up.
  • Keep all copies of business transactions with the University and all course materials in an organized file folder.
  • Ask questions. There is no such thing as a stupid question.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for assistance.
  • Join a study group for each course.
  • Have a positive attitude.
  • Work out a time schedule that meets your individual needs. Build in your study review time, sports or music practice, and leisure time activities around the hours spent in class.
  • Use as much time as possible between classes for study time. Wise management of your time will reduce anxiety as well as provide you with free time.
