African Nationalism: Yoruba Politics, Religion, and Culture
(Pols 126)
The Howard University Study Abroad Program presents a unique opportunity for students to broaden their educational experience. Accordingly, the Department of Political Science is offering a Study Abroad course on African Nationalism: Yoruba Politics, Religion, and Culture for summer 2012 in Oyo and Ile-Ife, Nigeria. While in Nigeria, students will study the politics, religion, language, and culture of the Yoruba people. The greater part of the course will take place at the Wande Abimbola Ifa Heritage Institute in Oyo (the ancient political capital of the Yoruba) and in Ile-Ife (the cultural origin of the Yoruba). Particular emphasis in this two week course is placed on Yoruba culture and related spiritual cosmology, and their correlation to Yoruba political concepts and societal organization. Students will earn 3 credit hours for the course, which will take place during the first summer session from June 29 to July 13, 2012. The course will be taught in collaboration with the Abimbola Ifa Heritage Institute, Oyo, Nigeria.
